The world had long since ended, and we are all that remain. All I could do was look at the empty sky and dream about a future. The sky had become black hole devoid of stars, consuming the minds of all who dared look at it, filling heads with stupid ideas.  The only thing keeping us alive is The Core, a mechanism that produces an atmosphere and shield for our planet.

I lounged in my room, thinking about how worthless this life is. This isn't a room, this is a prison. I often found myself day dreaming about what I would do if I escaped this place. I wanted so badly to fall in love and have a normal life like people in ancient times. In my world, human contact has been forbidden, as is falling in love. Just my luck. If I even so much as left my room, I had to wear a ridiculous suit. There are deadly consequences for those who don't wear them; they are shot as soon as they are seen not wearing one. Of course, the city has their reasons.  A deadly disease without a cure threatens to destroy our world. It's airborne and its effects are often felt immediately after contact. This plague is believed to be a result of the end of the universe; one more way to rid the world of the human menace.

Knock. Knock. The sound came from the glass walls of my prison. My head jerked upward and there, I saw the strangest thing. There was a girl outside my room, tapping on my wall. She wasn't wearing a suit. What the hell was she thinking? She placed a small device on the door and unlocked it. I was in shock. The outside air rushed into my cell, frightening me. Was I going to die? The next thing I knew she had stuck a needle into my arm. She then grabbed my hand and proceeded to smuggle me out of the city.

I stopped her, "Who are you and what the hell are you doing?"

She groaned, "We don't have time for this." She then tried to drag me along again, but I quickly stopped her.

"First, tell me who you are and what you are doing with me!"

"Fine. My name is Rosa, and I cured you. Now, I'm getting you out of the city."

I don't know how long had passed since I had left the safety of the city, but at least I didn't have to walk anymore. I was exhausted. I looked around and I found myself in a cave, and I had no idea where I was, but the good thing I hadn't been affected by the disease.

"How come you haven't been affected by the disease?" I asked.

"There's a cure."

"That's impossible. They said there wasn't one."

"They lied."

"Why?"

"Simple, to control the ignorant masses who never dare to question a single thing."

There was silence again, but then I heard it. There were footsteps coming closer to the cave, and they were human. I thought it was nothing, I thought that others may have come here to get away from the city as well. Being the idiot that I was, I walked out of the cave.

"Wait!" Rosa shouted, trailing after me.

I saw people standing in front of me. They had followed us, guards from the city had tracked us down, and now they were going to kill us. I ran back into the cave, but it was too late, they shot me in the back. They missed. Unfortunately, Rosa wasn't so lucky. They shot her and they didn't miss this time. She died instantly. The guards figured they shouldn't waste another bullet, so they left me there to die. The last thing I did was reach for Rosa's hand. It was strange. She was the first human contact I had ever known. And the last. In these last moments, I realized I couldn't cure the world, or even part of it. I could only die in it. That was the last thing I remember; holding her hand.
